Our Divisional vision places a high priority on research. The central objective in our research activity is to produce work that is both excellent academically and is of benefit to the professional accounting and finance communities and to society generally. As identified in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, virtually all (90%) of the division’s research is of an international level of excellence, maintaining the high standard (5B rating) achieved in RAE 2001.
Our research is given cohesion through its organization around several key areas in which the Division has particular research strengths. In accounting we have particular strengths in financial reporting, auditing and accounting history. Corporate governance is a research area in both accounting and finance. Our research activity in finance is mostly concentrated on empirical corporate finance. However, we are also active in research on investments and on derivative securities. Most of our research is policy-focused.
During the last 10 years, members of the Division have published in accounting journals such as Critical Perspectives in Accounting, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Accounting and Business Research, Accounting, Auditing, and Accountability Journal, Corporate Governance: An International Review, British Accounting Review and British Tax Review. In the same period, finance research was published in journals such as The Journal of Finance, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Journal of Futures Markets, European Financial Management, and Journal of Law and Society.
The Division regularly hosts research seminars and produces an ongoing series of working papers
Members of the Division hold editorial board positions at Accounting in Europe (Lisa Evans), Accounting History (Lisa Evans), Qualitative Research in Financial Markets (Yulia Veld-Merkoulova), European Financial Management, Problems and Perspectives in Management, Review of Futures Markets and Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences (Chris Veld), Studies in Economics and Finance (Kevin Campbell) or regularly act as ad hoc reviewers for many different journals.
Research also underpins our other activities and teaching on our Master of Science programmes, the MSc in Investment Analysis and the MSc in Finance, and the MSc in International Accounting and Finance, as well as the later years of the undergraduate programmes.
The Division also operates a thriving doctoral programme and we currently have 9 students registered for PhD study including some part time students - three of whom have chosen to study with us although resident in Canada. It is also possible to study for an MPhil by research.
In our research we seek to serve the business professions and the community and this reflects the close links that the Division enjoys with the professional accounting bodies and with finance practitioners. Staff members have written monographs for professional bodies such as The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
Individual research interests are detailed on the home pages of members of staff.
